Hundreds marched through the streets of the nation’s capital on Oct. 14 demanding action by authorities to curb climate change and environmental collapse.

The rally, part of a national day of action organized by environmental activism group People’s Climate, stood in solidarity with communities feeling the impacts from climate change and sought to pressure the government to divest from fossil fuel interests – many of which are based in the District.

“DC houses both the most formidable culprits of climate change as well as front line communities feeling the worst of its impacts,” reads the event’s description on Facebook. “Join us in giving DC a big, bold voice in this movement.”

Starting in DC's Franklin Park, the march culminated with a “die-in” in front of the American Petroleum Institute on L St. NW, a lobbying front for the oil and natural gas industry.

The march precedes a major United Nations climate conference set to occur in Paris between Nov. 30 and Dec. 11. The conference will aim to “achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius,” according to the French government.
